ISLAND BAY SURF CLUB
• “HARD UP” NIGHT MINISTER PRESENTS PRIZES. Had a stranger entered the Mnsonie Hall at Island Bay on Wednesday evening he would have been surprised at the apparent poverty of some of the residents as evidenced in the garments worn. Appearances are sometimes deceiving, ana it was the "hard up" social of the Elastern Queen Committee to help the Eastern Queen to gain tho honour of "Queen of Island Bay." Signs of poverty were everywhere and some of the displays were heartbreaking, but though the clothes showed signs of distress the wearers showed that they were out for a night's fun and got it. Tho Hon. R. A. Wright, M.P., was introduced by Mr T. A. Ricketts and received an ovation. He said that as ho had paid homage to the Western Queen (Mies Dulcic Howard) tho week previously he felt that ho had also to corue along and pay homage to the Eastern Queen (Miss Doris Lennio). Ho wished the Surf Club every success in it's effort to raise funds to enlarge tho clubhouse, as no was convinced that with the increasing population of the district and the increased support given to tho club that more accommodation was urgently necessary. He wished the two Queens every happiness, and trusted that tho contest would bo fought out in the true spirit of friendly rivalry* Ho was asked to make the presentation of tho prises won for the most hord-up costume. He was thankful that he was not asked to judge them. His recollections of tho only time he had acted as a judge—it was a V * v show—was not of the happiest. (Laughter.) The Minister then presented prizes to Miss M. Lonnie and Mr V. Reece; hardup ladv, Miss J. Collins; hard-up gentleman, ‘Mr IT. Skinner. The Eastern Queen presented a bouquet of flowers to Mr Wright to bo handed over to Mrs Wright as an appreciation from the Eiastern Committee . .. Mr A. Dicker (president of Surf Club) then presented kowpics. for good luck, to the Eastern and Western Queens and to the maids of honour, Misses Mona McClure and Miss N. Vidulich. Dancing took place and the orchestra played uplendid music with Mr A.. Dickor as conductor. The "poverty stricken ' residents left the hall fooling that happiness can be allied to poor clothing as well as to evening dress. Tho function was a great success, and reflects credit on the i onergetio committee.
