SCOURGE OF HOUSE MICE COUNTRY ALIVE WITH THEM. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association* NEW YORK, January 7. Some time ago Buena Vista Lake, comprising 10 square miles, in Kern County, California, was drained and transformed into a vast wheatfLeld. Reapers, a year hack, reported that a tremendous number of house mice had invaded the field. The late autumn found the surrounding grassland alive with rodents. When thousands of sheep were turned on to this, the mice moved towards the higher ground. Hoards invaded the wheatfields ana nearby towns. _ The highways were car, peted with the pests, which swarmed into homes and barns, destroying foodstuffs, clothing, and crops. Dr Raymond Hall, of the Univer« sity of California, a zoologist, investigated the phenomenon, and declared that the scourge was unbelievable. Farmers were trying to save their crops by ploughing furrows around the fields and filling them with % poisoned grain, hut despite this the mice forged ahead.
