Sir George and Lady Clifford are in Wellington. Professor Condliffe. of Canterbury College, is visiting Wellington.

The Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., arrived by tho Waliine from Lyttelton yesterday.

Mr H. A. Andersen, offieer-in-charge of the Valuation Department at Dunedin, lias been appointed to a similar position at Auckland. Mr J. Newell, manager of the New Zealand Sugar Company, arrived from the south yesterday. Mr J. H. C. Bond, Dominion Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has returned to Wellington from Christchurch.

Mr J. G. Gibbs has been appointed assistant instructor in agriculture at Palmerston North, Mr W. Walker in the Bay of Plenty district, Mr A. A. Hume at Dunedin, and Mr W. Dryden at Invercargill,

The funeral of Mr Charles Godber was very largely attended. The service at the residence was conducted by tho Rev. F. E. Harry and the Rev. W. P. Laecelles, and that at the graveside by the Rev. F. E. Harry, assisted by the Rev. W. R. Rollings. P.G. Turner, of tho Loval Britannia Ijedge, M.U., 1.0.0. F.. read the Oddfellows’ service at the conclusion, the late Mr Godbor having been an enthusiastic Oddfellow in his younger days.

Mr Percy S. Crisp, who has been appointed editor of the Auckland "Sun,” which will start publication shortly, relinquished his position as editor of the Christchurch “Sun” on Saturday last, when he was presented with a set of desk requisites and a briar pipe from the literary staff. Mr M. E. Lyons, chief reporter, who made the presentation, referred ta Mr Crisp’s successful journalists career during the seven years he hat been with the “Sun,” and the staff’; pride in his achievement. Captain J. Wilson, who recently retired after 42 years’ service in the Northern Steamship Company, was presented at Auckland with a case of pipes by the members of the Merchant Service Guild. Tho presentation took place at the guild’s rooms, and Captain Dorling, who presided, spoke in eulogistic terms of Captain Wilson’s long service in the company. Captain Wilson suitably replied, recalling experiences during his career at sea. which Commenced in 1872 in Baltic and Mediterranean coastal traders. He afterwards served in sailing ships of various types until he joined the Northern Company in the Mercury Bay service in 1884.
