CIVIL WAR IN MEXICO
ARCHBISHOP RESPONSIBLE? CHARGES AND COUNTER-CHARGES GOVERNMENT ANXIOUS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Zi. Cable Association. MEXICO CITY, January 18. The Government insists that Francisco Jiminez, the Catholic Archbishop of Guadalajara, is in the field personally leading a revolutionary army of 500 riflemen in the State of Jalisco. On the other hand, the churchman’s friends declare that he is in no way responsible for the uprising, _ having fled from Guadalajara a fortnight ago, fearing arrest. Whichever report is correct the Government is extremely concerned with the seriousness of the situation, fearing that the flame of rebellion will spread throughout the entire district. The War Department has ordered reinforcements to be entrained with orders ruthlessly to crush the rebels. The newspaper “El Sol” declares that the archbishop has flooded Jalisco with seditious literature, and is makifig reaj headvmy in a war against the Government under the banner: “Long Live Christ Our King.”
