GREAT BUSH FIRE IN NEW SOUTH WALES
COMMISSION TO REPORT,
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 11. The Government has appointed a Royal Commission to inquire into the cause of the bush fires which recently 6wept the State, and as to means which could be adopted to prevent their recurrence.
At the Police Court, in Wagga. Leslie Sterck was fined £1 10s on a charge of carelessness in connection with a lire which occurred on December 19th, causing £40,000 worth of damage. The police gavo evidence that the .bush fires which swept the Murrumbidgee Valley, near AVagga, were caused by Sterck’s lighting a fire in an open fireplace among dry grass in order to boil water. A strong wind was blowing, and the fire broke away. When the accused was asked why he did not attempt to extinguish the fire he said that he could not put out fire with boiling water.
