AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS ACCURACY WINS BARTLEET MEN’S SINGLES THRILLING LADIES’ MATCH Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 8. The Auckland lawn tennis championships concluded to-day. Results : Men’s Singles.—E. L. Burtleet beat. A. W. Sims, 6—3, 6—4, 7—5. Ladies’ Singles.—Miss M. Speirs beat Miss B. Knight, 7—5, I—6, 6—3. Men’s Doubles.—E. L. Bartleet and H. L. Robson beat H. Brinsden and E, W. Griffiths, 6—l. 4—6, C—l, 6—2. Combined Doubles.—A. W. Sims and Miss Knight beat H. Brinsden and Mrs Scott-Watson. 6—4, 6—3. In the men’s singles final, both players stayed at the back of the court for the first two sets, during which Bartleet was always a shade superior. Both drove with vigour and placed prettily, but Bartleet was the more accurate of the pair. Sims advanced to the net in the third set, and gained a slight lead in the early stages, but could not capture Bartleet’s service. Bartleet also came into the net in the third set, and s iiard-fought match ended in his favour. ERRORS FREQUENT Misses Speirs and Knight fought out a thrilling final, although errors were very frequent. After being three games behind in the first set, Miss Knight made a fine recovery, and pushed the Canterbury player to ad vantage before the latter won. Miss Knight, driving splendidly and smashing vigorously, captured the second set with the loss of only one game. Miss Speirs gained a lead of five to one in the third set, when Miss Knight made another effort, taking tho next two games, but Miss Speirs won tho next and the match. Bartleet and Robson had a comfortable win against Brinsden and Griffiths in the men’s doubles final. The tennis was disappointing, the losers being more erratic than usual. Bartleet and Robson had particularly strong services, while the winners killed many of tho lobs tossed up by their opponents. EXCITING GAMES PLAY AT NEW PLYMOUTH NEW SOUTH WELSHMEN PROMINENT. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 9. Tho Taranaki lawn tennis championships were concluded yesterday in ideal weather, before a large attendance. Members of the New South Wales touring team were prominent amongst the finalists, and were playing splendid tennis. Dr North was not up to his usual form in the final, the chief factor contributing to his defeat being the remarkable recoveries of Haege, who secured almost impossible returns with surprising consistency. In' the men’s doubles. Peach brothers were too. strong in their overhead work at the not for Lampe and France, though the latter were a little inferior in other respects. The final of the doubles provided thrilling tennis, the Peach brothers losing the last of five sets, 13—11, after being match point early in the set. The final matches of the tournament resulted as follow:
Men’s Singles (semi-final). —Haege (Victoria) defeated Malfroy (Wellington), 6—3, 6—2. Final: Haege defeated Dr. North (N.S.W.). 6—4, 2—6, 6—l, 6—3.
Ladies’ Singles (final). —Miss Watson (N.S.W.) defeated Miss Lloyd (N.S.W.), 6—4, 6—4. Boys’ Singles (final). —Drew (Dunedin) defeated Ewart (New Plymouth), 6—l, 6 —5. Girls’ Singles (final).—Miss M. Nutting (Inglewood) defeated Miss Gayton (New Plymouth), 6—4. 6 —2. Men’s Doubles (semi-final). —N. Peach and F. Peach (N.S.W.) defeated Lampe (Wanganui) and France (Wellington). 6—4, 9—7. Final: McCausland and Dr. North (N.S.W.) defeated F. and N. Peach, 6—l, I—6, 6—3, 3—6, 13—11.
Ladies’ Doubles (semi-finals). —Misses Lloyd and Watson (N.S.W.) defeated Mrs Smith (Wanganui) and Miss Malcolm (Now Plymouth), 6—4, 6—l. Mrs Allison and Miss RunJle (New Plymouth) defeated Mrs Marshall (Wellington) and Miss Cameron (Mas't.erton), 5—6, 6—3, 7—5. Final: Misses Lloyd and Watson defeated Miss Rundlo and Mrs Allison, 6—3, 6—l.
Combined Doubles (fourth round). — N. Peach (N.S.W.) and Miss Bundle (New Plymouth) defeated Shaw (New Plymouth) and Mrs Smith (Wanganui), 6—4. 6 —2. Haege (Victoria) and Miss Simpson (New Plymouth) defeated Atmore and Dr Atmore (Otaki), 6—3, 6—3. Semi-final: Dr. North and Miss Lloyd (N.S.W.) defeated N. Peach and Miss Rundle, I—6, 6—3, 6—3. Haege and Miss Simpson defeated MeCausland and Miss Brewster, 7—5, 3—6, 6—2. Final: Dr. North and Miss Lloyd defeated Haege and Miss Simnson, 6—3, o—3. PALMERSTON NORTH TOURNEY OPENED IN GLORIOUS WEATHER. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., January 8. Even the most sanguine hardly expected such glorious weather as that which prevailed for the opening of the Palmerston North tennis tourney. The sky was cloudless, and there was no wind. The day was devoted to preliminaries only, and a regrettable feature is the absence of the more noted players who are detained at the Auckland and New Plymouth tourneys, but are due on Monday. Haege (Victoria) is competing, while the Australians are to give an exhibition game on Tuesday AGAINST NEWSOUTH WALES THE WANGANUI TEAM. Per Press Association. W'ANGANUI, January 9. The following team will represent the Wanganui Tennis Association against New South Wales here tomorrow:—S. Powdrell (captain), A. Wheeler, M. Lampe, N. B. Bnrkman, J. E. Marshall, J. Powdrell and P. H. Jones, seventh man. The prospects of the local team are good if the weather remains fine, hut conditions are threatening to-night. I
