SALARY TOO LOW

RAILWAY OFFICIAL RESIGNS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 22. Mh H. Welsh, business agent in the commercial branch of the Railway Department, has tendered his resignation to tbe Givernment in ordere to take up a position as sales manager for White Island Products, Ltd. This is the second noteworthy resignation from the department in the last eight months; Mr H. H. Sterling having resigned from the Railway Board last January to become general manager of the New Zealand Co-operative Datry Company. . Asked to make a statement regarding his resignation, Mr Welsh said the commercial branch was 'established by the. Government for the purpose of increasing the business of the Railway Department. It was undoubtedly tiie finest branch in the service from the publio point of view, for it officers were at one and the same time tbe advocates of the department to the public and the publio to the board of managers. The position bad to be faced, however, that the Railway Department could not hope to retain men of business aoument in the commercial branch as long'as salaries remained an such a low standard compared with the salaries paid by business firms to their commercial representatives.
