HOCKEY CONTEST
WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON HOME TEAM THE VICTORS. An interesting game which was marred at intervals by the inclemency of the weather, was witnessed at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, when a representative team from Wairaiapa met a local representative team. The visitors put up an excellent fight, but were not strong enough to beat the Wellington men. The teams were: Wairarapa (white). —Goal, Tilson, full-backs, W. Bannin, C. Bannin; halves, B. Foster, Whitburn, Wallis ; forwards, N. Goodin, K. Goodin, Higgs, S. Smith. E. .Smith; emergency, S. Gallon. Wellington (black and gold).—Goal, T. Brennan; full-backs, Hull, Spiers; halves, Crawford, Perrin (captain), Thorpe; forwards, IC. Dee. R. Lusty (vice-captain), MacDonald, U. Knowles, W. Hood. Despite the rain which fell on Friday night and Saturday morning, the ground was in fairly good condition. During the afternoon there was rain, but not sufficient, to stop piay. The visitors won the toss and chose to play with the wind. From the start, Wellington pressed hard, and in the ensuing play MacDonald and Spiers figured prominently. Wairarapa got possession of the ball and almost scored, but Brennan managed to kick the ball out and the tables were turned, the ball returning to the Wairarapa area. A brilliant piece of play on R. Lusty’s part resulted in Wellington scoring. Wellington 1, Wairarapa 0. Shortly after MacDonald scored again for Wellington. Wellington 2, Wairarapa 0. Over-eagerness in the circle spoiled Wairarapa’s chances after this, and R. Lusty again scored. Wellington 3, Wairarapa 0. Up and down play followed, and after some exciting play E. Smith netted for Wairarapa. Wellington 3, Wairarapa , 1. Half-time followed. The second spell: however, seemed to stimulate the visitors, who brightened up their play. E. Smith got hold of the ball and sent it right past Brennan. Wellington 3, Wairarapa 2. After this the game brightened up and Brennan stopped a goal by a clever movement., and playing splendidly, got the ball and centred to Lusty who scored. Wellington 4, Wairarapa 2. Tho ground was now becoming slippery and play was not so good. MacDonald, by an excellent piece of work, scored for the home team. Wellington 5, Wairarapa 2: Play became exciting. Both sides got possession of the ball in turn, until 8. Smith dashed up the field and netted a splendid goal. Wellington 5, Wairarapa 3. The game ended without any further score, and with Wellington attacking. Messrs B. Lloyd and W. Keys were the referees. CURTAIN-RAISER Y.M.C.A. TJDAAJ.S MEET. Wellington Y.M.C.A. had an easy win over a team from Nelson Y.M.C.A. at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Wellington were a decidedly older team, and quickly took the attack, Ferguson netting a few minutes after the cohlmencement. Nelson were, however, unable to hold their opponents, and Steptoe scored again for Wellington just before halftime, when the tally stood at 2—o iri favour of the home team. Wellington continued the attack throughout the match. The scorers for Wellington in this half were: Steptoe (2) and Grocott, and the final scores were Wellington 5, Nelson 0. Mr R. Staples and Mr Russell were the referees. HATCH CUP Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. The hockey Hatch Cup for primary schoolboys was retained by Canterbury. Wellington only managing to make a draw. In the secondary schools’ match, Canterbury beat Otago four goals to nil.
