. SPLENDID WIRELESS RECEPTION JOAK AND WELLINGTON. Oh Friday night last, just after midnight, Mr R. Leslie Jones, of Lyall Bay, Wellington had station JOAIt on the wire with his eight-valve Ultradyne receiving set, very much stronger and clearer than he had got this particular station of late. Mr Jones was listening-in to Australian stations, and before closing down for the night tuned in for JOAK, picking up this station immediately, . and held it from 12.5 a.m. until 12.21 a.m., and then JOAK shut down. Every word came through as clear as a bell, and would be equal to 4QG (Brisbane) in volume and tone. Mr Jonas frequently has Japan on the wire, and those trying their hand at picking up JOAK should note that the wave-length of JOAK last Friday night was just above Melbourne 4QG. The Ultradyne set Mr Jones is using at present comprises four radio and detector, oscillator, modulator, and two stages of audio. Only one stage of audio was used for Japan, and all Australian stations, including Adelaide, came in with splendid volume on the loud speaker. If anything, Sydney (2BL) has not been quite up to its usual standard during this last week. Mr Jones expects to receive the parts for his new and improved Ultradyne 6et (nine valves) ‘ from New York in the course of a few days; and according to the correspondence received from the inventor and maker, great results should be obtained. The selectivity of this new set when wired to suit Wellington conditions should be well-nigh perfect The presept Ultradyne set used by Mr Jones is extremely good and selective, whilst the new set when installed will be even more so. The new IYA (Auckland) station is giving out excellent programmes with fine strength and perfect modulation, while the items on the programme have been rendered clear, and well delivered into the microphone. Mr Jones states that IYA Auckland was a real treat to lisen to Friday night last.
Auckland and Brisbane, with Melbourne a close runner-up for second place, would be the placing of these three stations, in Mr Jones's opinion, during the last week. .
