CATTLE BRANDING

FARMERS IN FAVOUR REMITS FOR CONFERENCE. The next move in the cattle branding question will be made in a few days when the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union meets in Wellington. Remits from the combined conference (Wellington, Wanganui, Wairarapa and Manawatu), as well as from North Canterbury, Marlborough, Otago, Hawke’s Bay, and South Taranaki urge that the branding of cattle be made illegal except on the shoulder or neck, giving approval to the head office suggestion to that effect. The Royal Agricultural Society, after receiving a report from the Stud Cattleowners’ Associations is acting similarly, and has given its approval to the suggestion. This means that unless the business of Parliament proves too heavy a bill on the lines approved by the farmers may be introduced this 1 session, as Dr. Reakes (Director of Agriculture) told the Royal Society som© weeks ago. AU the remits forwarded by provincial associations also favour dehorning of all cattle except herd book cattle before they reach the age of two years. The associations which express this opinion are widespread and include Auckland, South Canterbury, mid-Canterbury, North Canterbury, Otago, Hawke’s Bay, and the combined conference.
