“DIARY OF A YOUNG LADY”
WRITTEN BY A SCHOOLGIRL ENGLISH CRITICS DECEIVED. Australian and N Z. Cable Association. LONDON, June 3. It is now Tevealed that one of the sensations of the publishing season, "The Diary of a Young Lady of Fashion, 1764-65, ” of which 30,000 copies were sold in three months, and which, purporting to be an authentic, historical document, deceived many critics, including Lord Justice Darling, who said: "The diary takes its place beside jpepys’s,” was written by Miss Magdalen Iving-Hall, daughter of Admiral King-Hall, ex-Commander-in-chief of the Australian Squadron. She is only 19 years old. The revelation is the more piquant because the book included a - description of a lover’s attempt to climb into a girl’s bedroom at nig;ht, and other episodes with which a girl just out of school is not supposed to be familiar. Miss King-Hall says; "I wrote the book to escape boredom. I have already made a considerable amount of money out of the book. I have had a ‘bust,’ but the family is making me invest the rest.’
