ON THE LAND
POSITION OF SOLDIERS' HOUSES GREATER ASSISTANCE SOUGHT CONCESSION ON RATES MOOTED On the recommendation of the i Lands and Immigration Committee, the Dominion conference of the R.S.A. yesterday decided to again ask the Minister for Lands to furnish a statement on the possibility of the Discharged Soldier Settlers* Act being reoponed for housing purposes. Where land or houses are transferred from soldiers to civilians the Government will be asked to endeavour to transfer tho advance to the State Advances Offko in order to build up the* D.S.S. fund, and that these funds be | made available to soldiers who, through no fault of their own, were unable to obtain assistance in tho past. RATE REMISSIONS • The Government will be urged to give power to county councils to review all arrears of rates owing to them by soldier settlers on tho basis that rating should be on a sum not greater than that, on which the farm is re-valued; and that it date back to the time from which revaluation takes effect. Also that county councils bo given power to write off further sums in cases which they consider necessitous.
