RECONDITIONING PACIFIC LINER. . Great interest is evinced in ship-build-rag circles, says "Syren Shipping," as to the outcome of the tenders submitted by eight leading firms for the re-engin-,n 8 wd reboiler.ing of the Canacfian Pacific liner Empress of Australia. This vessel—formerly the German-built Tirpitz, surrendered to Britain under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles—is at present fitted with a machinery installation which comprises the Fottinger hydraulic reduction gear and a set of water-tube boilers, and, it is understood it is the intention of the C.P.S. to have these replaced by singlo reduction geared turbines of 21,000 s.h.p., with 200 deg. superheat, and a range of 14 Scotch single-ended boilers. Under the existing arrangement neither the turbines nor the propellers have been operating at economical speeds, and hence the decision of the owners to adopt, measures which are undoubtedly of the heroic order. NAVIGATING PANAMA CANAL. Some interesting figures have appeared in a- recent issue of the Panama Canal Record regarding the number of ships passing through the canal, together with the time taken in making the journey. As an instance, during tne month of November last, the average time occupied by 217 vessels in navigating the canal from the Atlantic to Pacific was 7 hours 34 minutes per vessel, whilst in the reverse direction 202 ships took an • average of 8 hours 35 minutes per vessel. Following this the report states that the fastest transit time from Pacific to Atlantic was 6 hours 33 minutes, made by the motor-ship Lochgoil, of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. The fact that a motor-ship should hold the record is worthy of note at n time when this cla«s of vessel is rapidly gaining favour fitfe .owners.
