PROFESSIONAL CONTEST PURDY DEFEATS McDONALD. Per Pre.ss Association. TAUMARUNUI, April 19. C. Purdy (9et lllbl defeated I-Jector McDonald, of Australia (9st 61b) in a pro•essional contest on Saturday night for a purse of *£lso. Purdy won comfortably, being much too clever and speedy for his opponent. The first two rounds were very tame, Purdy scoring freely with light taps. Tn the third round, Mr R. Meale, referee, stopped the bout, called the boxers together, and told them they would have to make it more willing if the fight, was to continue. After that both men livened up, ami tho concluding rounds were quite inloresling, with Purdy unloading a fairly heavy right cross at times. There was not enough ■ting in it, however, for a krtock-out. Tho amateur bouts were of a very high order. J. Rishara and .Toe Smith gave a great display in a six-round lightweight contest, which ended in a draw.
