One of tho worst scandals in the history of the pure food laws in this city was disclosed after a montii's investigation by the Health Department. It was revealed that 300,000 gallons of adulterated milk had been sold daily for years. The investigation also shows that nearly all municipalities are similarly affected, Jersey City’s supply being 21 per cent, adulterated, in many cases to such an extent as to be practically water. HEALTH OFFICIALS CORRUPT The existence of corruption in fhe Health Department of New York was disclosed. The department’s inspectors aro not trusted, and uniformed policemen ill many instances are being used to test milk. The department’s efforts to stop the shipments of so-called “bootleg milk” into the city were frustrated by railway employees, who were bribed by parties to hide impure supplies. OIL SOLD AS CREAM Cream was adulterated heavily with oils. A clique of blackmailers existed, levying tribute upon dishonest dealers under threat to reveal the conditions. Four men are now being held and grand jury indictments aro expected. One blackmailer confessed that he had collected 100,000 dollars a year. Department officials claim that powerful forces are working against them, and that incriminating evidence is being stolen from the department’s recordroom.
