Terrific explosions on Friday night marked the sinister advance of the Mauna Loa volcano, which has been in eruption for several days. A Catholic church and a residence were buried under 20 feet of lava in its progress to the sea, which it is expected to reach within 30 hours. Following a severe earthauake shock another outbreak appeared near the summit of the volcano. On Friday night for the first time the crimson lava fountains high in the air were visible from the opposite side of the island, and from them conld be seen the flow of lava, as it sprend fanlike toward the edge of the Pacific.
