EMPRESS THEATRE
“THAT DEVnTQUEiMADO” “That Devil Quemado,” a picturesque big figure on a snow-white horse who plays havoo with feminine hearts, laughs at villains, rides like the wind and lives in a mountain fastness from which he occasionally rushes down intd town to kidnap a fair maid or right a grievous wrong, appears on the screen of the Empress Theatre this week. “That Devil Quemado” is a picturesque story of border raids conducted by a Quixotic and delightful character, and it proves an excellent vehicle for the athletio star, as its author, Marvin Wilhite, doubtless knew that it would be. Gloria Hope is a pretty, vivacious and wholly charming heroine, while all of the large cast proves adequate. Silver King, the wonder horse, admirably supports Fred Thomson, who is “Quemado.” Also starring is “Not So Long Ago,” a Sidney Olcott production of New York life in 1860, starring dainty Betty Bronson. “Not So Long Ago,” finds Betty as a romantic girl who works as a seamstress in a fashionable homo that her father may continue tinkering around his pet invention, a “horseless carriage.” She is the kind of girl who devours sentimental novels and weaves pretty romances in the air. In addition to these two big productions there is a plendid supporting programme, including a comedy and a Rathe Gazette, while the Empress distinctive orchestra, under Mr M. T. Dixon, plays a special musical score.
