SETTLEMENT OF OTAGO
ANNIVERSARY OBSERVED HOLIDAY AT DUNEDIN. Ter Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 24. Tlie ship Jcthn Wickliffe, the first of two vessels that brought out pioneers to tho Otago settlement, arrived at Port Chalmers on March 23rd, 1838. Yesterday was, therefore, tho sev.enty-eighth anniversary of tho founding of the settlement. It was observed as ft holiday in Dunedin—a holiday of distinctive character, for though the day is not on tlie Arbitration Court’s list of holidays, few men wero seen at. work and trade came to a complete standstill, shops and warehouses being closed. Active signs' of tho holiday about town were the flying of flags and the moving about of trams and 'buses and trains to suit the demands of those who wanted t-o get away for picnics. Otherwise tho city was ns quiot as on a Sunday.
