VOCAL RECITAL
EDWIN DENNIS AT TOWN HALL A large, and enthusiastic audience gathored in the Concert Chamber at tho Town Hall last evening when Mr Edward Dennis, the distinguished tenor, assisted by Eugene uennis, elocutionist, gave an excellent and appreciated- concert. Mr Dennis, who lias had- a successful career ip London, where he appeared at the Queen’s Hall, and also in Australia, is the possessor of- a tenor -voice of rare beauty and power of expression, his interpretation of the various items of an ex- . tensive and diversified nrogrnmme marking him as an artist of real ability. From Gounod’s "Lend me your Aid” (La Heine de Saba) to the ‘'--eronade” of Franz Schubert, is a big step in interpretative effort but one which Mr Dennis took without difficulty. MacFadven) ; “Boat Song” (Harriet Ware); “Ipviotus” (Kruno Hahns: “Elegie” (J. Massenet); The Angelus” (Thurlow Lietirance); Ih° u rt Like Unto a CTcaver” fßohsrt *.cnnmam); “The Trumpeter GVirlie Dix); “Baby” (Albert Mallison); Au Pays” (Augusta Holmesi: O visit-, or Entrancing” • (Goring I homasl: “Mignon” (Guy D’Havdelot); Among the Fuchsias” (H. T. -Burleigh) j faylvelin’’ (Christian Sindingl; ami ves»i la Giubbn” (T.oncaynHo). Eugenio Dennis in a nuni-.ier "I items proved herself to he an eloeutionist of more than usual merit. Her first item was a recital, in character. of “Queen Katherine’s Defence (King Henry VIII.), where it. that passionate plea for justice, eliding in I a denunciation of her enemy, Cardinal IWolsey, the artist had full scope lot change and play of emotions. A humorous sketch, “The Way to Aroint Him,” .followed, and was succeeded ]y that well-known passage from the ‘‘French Revolution,” of Thomas Carlvle. “nwiott-' <"orduv.” A dramatic sketch, “The Ballet Dancer,” concluded this portion of tlio programme.
