PETONE

PERSONAL His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. McEwan) leaves New Zealand in May on a trip tb the Old Country. Mr and Mrs Fox returned home this week after spending an enjoyable holiday in the South Island during which they visited the Dunedin Exhibition. hiiss Beryl Bowden, who has been in Petone, on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs A. G. Bowden, has returned to Otago University to complete her course in medicine Mr and Mrs J. R. Carey are at present on a visit to Palmerston North. Mr Leibezeit is spending a holiday in Nelson for the benefit of his health. PICNIC The annual picnic of the Petone Working Men’s Club was held last Saturday at the Hutt Park, and over 1500 people had a most enjoyable outing. A word of praise is due to the secretary, Mr I'\ Pitcher, who had all the arrangements working without a hitch. The Petone Municipal Band supplied a very fine programme of music which was much appreciated by the large crowd present. MINISTER WELCOMED The Rev. H. E. Edridge, the newlyappointed minister to the Baptist Cnurch, has arrived with liis family, and the congregation gave him a welcome social last week. The church was crowded, and after several had spoken words of welcome, the Rev. Edridge 'suitably replied. At both his services last Sunday the Rev. Mr Edridge spoke to crowded congregations.

GENERAL MOTORS, LTD. The contractors for these large build- ‘ ings have completed the concrete foundations and drainage work, and have commenced with the laying of the floors. The first shipment of steel for 'the constructon has left America and should reach New Zealand about the middle of April. It is understood that the* company is -laying down water mains for fire purposes.

BANKING BRANCHES A branch of the National Bank ' has commenced business in a temporary building in Jackson street, and it is rumoured that the directors have purchased land in Jackson street, and upon which they intend to build an up-to-date and commodious building. The 'Commercial Bank of Australasia also is negotiating for a property in Petone, and will open a branch hank here.

WEDDING A wedding of considerable local interest took place last Wednesday evening, March 3rd, when Florence Evelyn, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Spence, of Petone, was married io Neil Westwood, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Craig, al?b‘ of Petone. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Blackburne, the service being fully choral. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a frock of satin marocain with an overdress of white embroidered georgette and embroideried veil. She carried a beautiful slower bouquet of white lilies, asters. , and maidenhair fern. Miss Nancy-Craig, who was, bridesmaid, a,,pretty frock o? pink crepe de chine over satin marocain, with hat to match. Little Edna Spenoe and Joan Craig made two dainty little flower girls. Mr, John Aldrich acted as best matt.

. A reception was given at St. Augustine’s Hall, where a large number of friends gathered. After the customary toasts had been honoured, and various speakers had voiced their good wishes, an adjournment was made to the dancing hall where the remainder of a pleasant evening was spent. The happy couple left by motor for i New Plymouth, where the honeymoon is being spent.

LOWER HUTT

TENNIS The Hutt tennis championships have advanced another stage. Results to date are as follow: Men’s Singles Championship.—Semifinal: J. Rodgers beat J. M. Power, 7—5, 3 —6, 6—2. Final: J. Rodgers beat M. Power 6 —l, 6—2. Combined Championship Doubles.— Third round: Power and Miss North beat Costello and Miss Jenness. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSN. A branch has been formed in Lower Hutt, and arrangements made for lectures to begin on Tuesday, March 13th. Dr. McLean will be the lecturer. HUTT GALA Interest in the coming gala is quickenihg. Miss Phyllis Johnson has been selected for the sports queen candidate, and Miss Payne for the Western Hutt. SCHOOL PICNIC The Hutt Main School held the annual school picnic at Maidstone Park last Thursday. The children were con veyed to and from the Park by a special train. A fine day contributed to make the picnic very enjoyable. GARDEN PARTY A garden party was held in the Roman Catholic School grounds, Nai Nai, last Saturday. The promoters had the benefit of a glorious summer afternoon, and the event proved very successful both from a social and financial view. PERSONAL Lieutenant Colonel Butcher is in camp with the Marlborough Territorial Battalion. Mr and Mrs E. W. Hunt are at present visiting the Dunedin Exhibition. Mr and Mrs L. T. Watkins are on a holiday in the South Island. UPPER HUTT PERSONAL : Mr L. M. Naylor, of Upper Hutt, is leaving shortly on a holiday trip to Dunedin. Mr Naylor expects to be away about a week. Mr and Mrs D; A. McCurdy have been spending a few days at “Bonny Glen,’’ Upper Hutt. FIRES The number of recent fires in this district was further increased on Saturday night when a racing stable, owned by Mr J. R. Linton and situated in Camp road, Trentham, was totally destroyed. The racehorses quartered there, among which were Town Crier and Sarty, were extricated with difficulty. Strenuous work by the Upper., Hutt Fire Brigade and a number of residents with buckets prevented the fire spreading to the adjoining buildings. The prevalence of fires in this area in the past few weejss serves to emphasise the urgeitt-iioed for a com- , plete water scherrro"for the Trenthaon and Silverstream districts. garden Party Perfect weather, beautiful surroundings, and the great effort made by those who were in control of the garden party held at Mrs Balcombe-Brown’s residence, at Maori Bank, in aid of the local branch of the Plunket Society, were factors which helped to make it the great success it undoubtedly was, resulting in the funds of the local branch benefiting to the extent of over one hundred pounds. In the absence of Mr W. H. Field, M.P., the fete was opened by the Mayor of Upper Hutt. All the members of the branch worked assiduously to make the function a success, and cars were generously provided by local yesidents for the conveyance of the public from the surrounding districts to the grounds. Mrs Frank Leokie, of Heretaunga, undertook the secretarial duties, in the absence of Mrs H. E. Lodge, who is at present laid aside with a serious illness. SPEEDING The advent of the bitumen road in this district ha? brought with it the inevitable motor speed hog, and at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Upper Hutt this (Wednesday) morning one of these offenders was dealt with a fine of £2 and costs being imposed by the presiding justices. The council is determined to put a stop to speeding in the borough, and an effort is being made to secure the services of an additional constable to cheek this and other breaches of the by-laws. BOWLS The Upper Hutt Bowling Club will be represented by a rink, with Mr L. M. Naylor as skip, an the Seatoun Bowling Club s green to-day (Wednesday) in matches for the Hill Pins. By defeating the Thorndon and Newtown clubs’ representatives in the rinks championship last Wednesday the local rink reached the semi-finals, but had to acoept defeat at the hands of a very solid combination representing the Kolburn Club.
