BROTHERS IN FRAUD
MANDEVILLES SENT TO GAOL PUBLIC LOSES £500,000. (Sydnev "Sun" Cable.) LONDON, January 21. Three brothers, Alexis, Walter, and Henry Mandeville, were each sentenced to six years’ penal servitude on ’ 51' charges, of which they pleaded guilty to 12, of conspiracy to obtain large sums of money by false pretences. 1 The prosecution said that the brothers, through advertisements, circulars, and a newspaper, “The Financial Mail,” which Alexis edited, and in connection with which he formed a company, induced the public to buy stocks and shares. The company 1 in 1919 showed a lass of £50,000, hut declared a dividend of 3b per oent. from, the motley paid by subsequent subscribers. , During the period from 1918 to 1921 the brothers received from the public £511,800, of which £31,200 was paid to the “Mail” Company. Tho balance Was misappropriated for their own use. All the brothers maintained expensive establishments. It was also recalled that, the Mandevilles’ bucket shops failed in 1909 with liabilities of £424*000 and assets £3. It is impossible to say to what extent the public has been defrauded in the present case, hut £500,000 would be a modest estimate.
