THE ESTIMATES AGAIN
WHY DID THEY VARY? RECEIPTS MUST FLUCTUATE. An echo of the recent trouble over City Council estimates, was heard last night when Councillor G. A. Troup asked when the estimates were made up. There were several items in* the schedule of the committee estimated receipts now before the council which differed widely from the estimates placed before, the council by the Mayor at the last meeting. For instances, loan account for services had (been shown ut £B2OO last meeting, and now they were set down*as £12,000. Licenses had similarly increased from £9OOO to £13,000. The Mayor: The new conditions now prevail, after the re.cast. Councillor Monteith: Are ( they recast every five minutes? The Mayor: They are not. ' Councillor Monteith: They have been three times this year. Councillor H. D. Bennett 6aid the items which ha,d been queried were those which varied according to the fluctuation of the council’s revenue. In estimating expenditure they must estimate on the high side, and in dealing with expenditure on the low side, said Councillor M. F. Luckie. The report was adopted.
