DISCHARGE OF GUANO
ALLEGED UNLAWFUL STRIKE rd, CHARGE AGAINST WATER'S-.. SIDERS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, December 17. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, ;Jfehe- Labour Department claimed a penalty of £lO each from sixteen waterside workers, alleging that they became parties to an unlawful strike at Dunedin on October 23rd. It was stated that they discontinued working the Kakapo after a dispute in connection with the remuneration for discharging Walpode Island guano. Evidence was given that the matter was referred to the "local Disputes Commitee, but Mr J. Roberts, secretary of the federation, who appeared for the men, denied having received any intimation of the dispute.
Mr J- Roberts, for the defence, raised the following nonsuit points: (1) That there was no evidence that the men had acted in combination; (2) that there was. no evidence that the men broke their contract of service; and (3) that there was no evidence of any injury to the employers. The magistrate held that there was a case to answer, and stated that the nonsuit points should not have been raised at that stage. The case was adiourned until January 2lst.
