Summer. i Jan. I—Wyndham R.C, Annual (two events). \ There should be good racing to-day l when the summer meeting of the Woodville Club will hfe opened. 1 The first race is timed to start at 11.45 a.m. i 1 The field for the hurdles ia not a good one, and there is little doubt Many- Colours will go out. the favourite. It might suit him better if the journey were a little greater, as there are several in the field who go a mile nnd a half well including Axle, Suspicion, Slump, and, occasionally, Toa Taua and Merry Singer. On recent running Many Colours looks to have a great chance.' The, Trial Plate might produce a surprise. Mah Jong and Kilbronsytu have shaped promisingly. The big race of the day, the Wood, vilie Handicap- has not drawn a classy field, hut several useful sorts will go to the post. If Fool’s Paradise can get the journey satisfactorily, he is nicely treated with 8.9. There is no doubt about Waetea beiflg able to see the job through to a finish, and ho' must be hard to beat, while Te Monanui, Clarinda, Kufaire and Merry Day also are expected ta go well.- It is a very open race, and Waetea, Kilfaire and Claeinda might be the hard ones.

Standard ran well enough at FeildIng behind'Motley ana Tamatete to make him a short-priced favourite in the Flying Hack Handicap. _ Lin Arlington has been racing fairly well, and Hymestrason goes fast. The open six furlongs, the Oete Handicap; is a difficult race to get a line on. Peneus is nearly back to form and ought to be very troublesome. Tuahine has a lot of racing and is about due. Several fairly good sprinters who have accepted might need the race. Joy King and Ngawaiti might be the favourites for the Nursery. i Printemps would need to do nothing more than reproduce his Levin form to look a good risk in the Borough Welter. Sir Pam and Agitato wifl be well bucked, and of those down the list Alabama might do the best. Riccarton form points to Kilmiss going well in the Hack Welter. Novar /an prominently at Feilding, and Asleep and Purple Lilac at l>evin, but Kilmiss has the best form. W. H. Jones and W. Bagby each rode one winner at Taumarunui, and are still level, with 14 wins each, in the winning apprentices’ list this Season. Be vis finished well in (fourth place in the Matapuna Hack at Taumarunui, carrying top weight, fist. It is practically certain that F.. D: Jones will race a. team at the Manawatu and Marton meetings during the holidays. It will prohably consist of Economist, Zaragoza and the two-year-olds Bank Note and Limerick. Deucalion might do his holiday racing in the North Island. He has been nominated for the principal events at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meetIng. - “Royal Despatch scored his first win in the Mount Harding Hack' Handicap at the Methven meeting on Saturday, though' he had twice been in a ■ place lately (says the Christchurch ‘Star’). Earlier in his career he became unpleasantly notorious, as he was the cause of F. D. Jones and M.i McCarten being disqualified for a year in Sydney. At that time he was a very erratic customer, and though ho has settled down a lot his, form is still that of a moderate, who should win more races, hut who fs • not likely to reach good company.”

In discussing F. Dempsey, who returns to England from Melbourne in February, an Australian writer says: -“One thing noticeable is that his English experience has caused DempBey to change his style in one respect—he rides with a longer rein than formerly. In the opinion of manv good judges it would be beneficial if more of our riders adopted .this idea. For one thing fewer horses wculd have their heads jerked up in the air when they jumped away a* jh o barrier-rise.”
