“MADAME SANS GENE.”
The famous Paramount film, “Madame Sans Gene,” is to be the feature at the De Luxe Theatre, commencing on Friday next. It is a dramatic story of the days of Napoleon, and the delightful romance off a laundress who became a duchess. In order that the story might be correct in every detail, -and in order that the true spirit of the Tomance could be brought to the screen, the Paramount officials decided that the picture would be made in France, with entirely French actors and staff, and Gloria Swanson was chosen to go to France to play the title role, she being the only person not of French birth iri tho picture. The great palaces of the Tuileries and Versailles, noted for tho sumptuous halls ■ and dinners of the French kings- and Napoleon, were thrown Open, so that the most authentic backgrounds oouid be obtained foi Die picture. The famous screen star, Gjona Swanson, gave a wonderful portrayal. of Catherine Hubscher, who is a laundress in Paris at the time of tho revolution. She marries Lefebyre, a soldier who rises to be a general under Napoleon. and the Duke of Danzig. Catherine cannot forget her early life and manners, and comes in for a great d/al of ridicule at the court of the Emperor. But her ready wit and keonness m untangling an' intrigue restores her to favour. Charles de Roche, popular' Franco-Amcrican leading man, appears in- support of the star. Emile Dram; of the Comedie Francaise, has the role of Napoleon; the other characters are all prominent on the French stage and screen. During the screening of “Madame Sans Gene,” My Sydney Tingey will appear in an elaborate prologue, reciting “Napoleon’s Farewell.'’ A monster matinee will be held on Saturday, at 2.30.
