BOWLING

N.S. WALES VISITOR MATCH BETWEEN TWO KINKS OE SKIPS. A visitor to Wellington this week is Mr John Rankin, vice-president of New South Wales Bowling Association, and one of tne most popular members of the Maniy Bowling Club. He is on a business trip, and leaves for the South Island on Friday evening. While in Wellington he is the guest of Tue Wellington Bowling Club, and yesterday afternoon a particularly interesting rink game was played for his entertainment. Mr Rankin skipped one rink and Mr Neil McLean the other, the players comprising «the leading skips of the Wellington Club. The rinks were Messrs E. J. Hill, Duncan, Frost and Rankin (6); Messrs Brinsden, Jackman, J. J. Roberts and McLean (s). In the early part of the afternoon the weather was delightful, the breeze making conditions pleasant, but after 4.30 it was somewhat cool. Nevertheless, 25 heads were played, and the teams entered into the event with as much keenness as if The Dominion championship depended upon the result. ■ New South Wales started o# with Jour, and in the first eight heads carried all before them, leading 13—2. On the 10th head Wellington rested four, New South Wales retaliated with four on the 11th, and Wellington put on another four at the 12th. making the score 19—10 in favour of the visiting skip. From then on skipper McLean could do nothing right. Twice he delivered a beautiful shot to carry kitty through, to improve his oononent’s position In the 18th head Roberts ran the kitty through and' lay two. Frost followed and ran kitty through a little further and caused his side to lav two. Skipper Rankin, with his last shot took the jack still further through' and was rather lucky to lay two after it. At f!>e next end he had the last bowl and Wellington lav two, so he drove and cut them both oiit. At the end of the 21st head the score was 30—14 in favour of Mr Rankin, andt while this head was being played a couple of sparrows settled on the oreen and followed tip two or three of the boWls, much to th" amusement of the players. Four more heads were played, the New South Wnles game being 25 heads, but the Wellington rink could do nothing right, and they had to acknowledge defeat bv 34—16. A pleasant half hour was afterwards spent in the pavilion, where the local "’avers extended a hearty welcome to Mr ’’anbin, who in turn expressed the hope ~at lie would he nhle to welcome them "11 at Manly green in the not far distant future.
