COLLEGE ATHLETICS

SEVERAL RECORDS LOWERED WELLINGTON BOYS’COLLEGE SPORTS EXCELLENT TIMES RECORDED The large playing-field of Wellington Boys' College presented a gay and at-, tractive appearance yesterday, on the occasion of the holding, of the annual college athletic sports. For many years past the annual sports gathering at the college has become a tradition, invariably well attended by parents, friends, relations, and last, but not least, old boyg, eager to renew acauaintaoce with their "Alma Mater." Nor was this year's gathering an exception, the morning events being witnessed by a laree gathering of interested spectators, while in the afternoon the ground and adjacentterrace were thronged with onlorikers. The weather conditions yesterday could * scarcely have been more pleasant, while tho track was fast and in splendid order. PROMISING ATHLETES That the college this year possesses a number of exceptionally promising athletes was amply demonstrated by the splendid performances registered in several of the events. In the half-mile handicap (open), A. E: Burd, running from the scratch mark, won easily by 10 yards, in the good time of 2min 11 4-ssec, thus breaking the previous record of 2inin 12 2-ssec, held by G. P. Rayward in 1916, by 3-sths of a second. J. C Hardie, the junior championship winner, by gaining first place from scratch in the 440yds handicap event under 16 years, bloke the previous record ’of 58 2-ssec, established by W. R. Parkinson as far back as 1900—25 years ago —by one-fifth of a second. A particularly fine performance was registered by C. B. Roberts, in the senior cross-country run, decided previous to yesterday. From scratch Roberts captured tjiis distance event in the great time of I7min 15 2-osec, thereby lowering ti. P. Rayward's previous record of 17 mins SSsec, established in 19i6, by 20 3Among the junior events, two competitqrs were successful in lowering records. In the third heat of the 100yds championship under 14 years, A. V, Charlton won in the good time of 12 l-ssec, thus clipping four-fifths of a second off the previous record established by J. Heinemann last year. Another promising young sprinter, H. Avery, competing in the 100yds championship under 15 years, set up a fresh record by winning in the fast time of 11 l-ssec. The previous record for this event was 11 3-5S3c, made by F. K. Styles in 1923. Other noteworthy performances during the day were those of I). C. Ryan t> who won the 120yds hurdles championship in the splendid time of 16 2-ssec; H. N. Anderson, winner of the 220yds championship run in 23 2-ssec—only one-fifth of a second outside the record of 23 l-ssec, established by C. H. Jenkins in 1923; and F. S. Ramson, winner of the senior championship cup, who registered consistently good performances in all championship events. Ramson, who proved the mainstay of the college senior team at the secondary schools' championships held last Saturday, yesterday captured the long jump championship with a creditable leap of 19ft s£in, and was .only lft behind Anderson in the open 220yds championship, run in the excellent time of 23 2-ssec.
