MR CHAPMAN ON DEFENCE
KEPLY TO NAVY LEAGUE. Mr C. H. Chapman, at Seatoun last eening, received an enthusiastic welcome from a large gathering of electors. Mr E. E. Lewis presided. Regarding the defence forces of Now Zealand Mr Ouapman stated that he was not at all sure that another cruiser would help. Probably, if defence became necessary, n would be found that poison gas, airplanes and submarines would bo more effective. The New Zealand Labour Party whole-heartedly supported the British Labour Government in its efforts to secure disarmament by agreement among the nations, and the New Zealand Labour Party, on assuming office, would be prepared to face the problems of defence in the light of that policy, and would be guiaed by tho circumstances prevailing at that time as to the extent to which disarmament could be achieved or defence was necessary.
In reply to the Navy League's second question Mr Chapman stated he would oppose any policy which would enable people with a lower standard of living than New Zealanders, euoh as Asiatics, to come into the Dominion in such numbers as to jeopardise our standard. Mr Chapman was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence. Later in the evening he received another enthusiastic welcome at Lyall Bay, where he addressed a packed meeting.
