PRICES AT WELLINGTON STORES Christmas will soon be here, and good housewives will he wise to “stock up” in advance. Prices are sure to go up within the next few weeks.
Vegetables show no change at present. The new season's peas and asparagus are still rather expensive.
The price of whitebait is a topic of conversation —it will not go down from 4s a pint. Flounders are Is 3d, and oysters 9d dozen (unopened) and Is dozen (opened);' smoked hake is Is 3d. It is hoped that fish will he more plentiful very soon. Fruit is just the same. Mandarins, apples, and oranges remain unaltered. Passion fruit are not very good, but next month a better stock is anticipated. Groceries show no change. Tinned asparagus (at present better than the fresh) is Is 3d tin. Sugar is 15s 9d for a 701 b hag; fjour remains the Cheese is Is 4d lb (prime) and Is (full cream); jams and tinned fruit show no change. Cooked ham is selling at 2s 6d lb.
Most butchers will soon he hooking orders for the Xmas poultry. Spring lamb (which ought to coihe down in price soon) js selling at Is 3d for hindquarters, and Is 5d for forequarters; beef sausages are very cheap at 4d lb; loin chops are 9d lb; silverside corned beef is 7d lb, and brisket 6d.
