A GREAT BAND
NEWCASTLE MEN SCORE AGAIN. RECITALS TO-NIGHT AND TOMORROW. The Newcastle Steel Works Band was again enjoyed by a good house at the Opera House last night, and each item of a wide and varied selection was enthusiastically received and encored. Not since the days of Sousa has an entertainment of its equal been heard locally. It is little wonder that this fine combination carried all before it when touring and competing in the Old World. Their repertoire last night ranged from operatio music to ragtime, from grave to gay, and each number was played with a fine appreciation of its capabilities. ' Among the numbers were an overture, “Noon and Night”; cornet solo, “Australia,” by Arthur Stender, who fully justifies his title of champion of champions; xylophone solo, “Russian Rag,” hy Harold Reid; and a selection from “Lucrezia Borgia.” The playing of tho Newcastle Steel Works Band lias been one of the titbits of the musical year, and a performance by them should not h» missed. It will be a long time before their equal is heard again. The final concert will he given tonight in the Town Hall, the Opera House being engaged. The programme to b© submitted will bo one of the most enjoyable of the season, as it will contain all tho most popular and classical musical gems. The great musical combination is on a world tour, and it is more than probable that in the musical tests at Home it will repeat the wonderful success achieved on the occasion of the last visit.
On Sunday evening a special hand recital will he given at the Opera House, when many musical gem will be played. A silver coin collection will be made. The Opera House should be crowded.
By kind permission of the management of th© visiting Australian Silver Band the ex-service patients from the Red Cross Home will attend a performance which is being given in the Town Hall. this evening. The Red Cross Socictv desires to thank tho conductor and members of the band for tlieir kindness.
