SCARE ON ATLANTIC LINER “INFERNAL MACHINE ABOARD” NOTHING FOUND IN SEARCH By Telegraph.—-Press Assn.—Copyright. (Sydney "Sun” Cablo.) LONDON, September 23. 'The “Daily Mail” states that tho Cunard Company’s New York office sent a wireless message to Captain Irvine, commanding the liner Berengaria, en route for Southampton with 1694 passengers and the crew, declaring that an infernal machine, timed to explode at ,4-50 p.m. on September 28th, was hidden aboard. Captain Irvine immediately organised a search, including the baggage, but found nothing suspicious. When the supposed hour for the explosion arrived he ordered a special boat drill, and.swung the boats out ready for manning, the passengers wearing life belts. The critical moment passed safely. It is understood that the precautions were due to an anonymous letter reaching Cunard’s, implicating the Industrial Workers of th® World.
The Cunard liner Berengana (ex German ship Imperator), 52,226 tons, is the third largest ship in the world.
