PROTECTION
ENDORSED BY MANUFACTURERS MOTION CARRIED AT CONFERENCE "A WHOLE-HEARTED PLEDGE” At the annual conference of the New Zealand. manufacturers _ which opened in Wellington yesterday, the proposal to submit a questionnaire to Parliamentary candidates as to whether they were in 'favour of a protective tariff was discussed at length. Mr A. TV. Parker (Christchurch), in formally moving the questionnaire, a copy of which was before the conference, emphasised the necessity of giving New Zealand manufacturers adequate protection. Mr L. T. Watkins (president) said that the secondary industries of New Zealand had now assumed such proportions as to justify their being fostered by the Government. The Manufacturers’ Association had no desire to go into politics nor to start a new party, but they considered this question one of national importance, and one on which each candidate for Parliament should give a definite reply. (Hear, hear.) Mr L. R. Partridge said that thiß was the most important matter which was before the conference. Many of the New Zealand industries were languishing for want of assistance. He instanced the woollen trade as a case in point. The manufacturers should not mince matters in this connection. They should go as far as. possible to get as high protection as they could. Mr W. Woolf: We have no protective tariff at present. We have a tariff for the purpose of collecting revenue, but that is merely an accidental one. Continuing, Mr Partridge said that it whs not a question of whether the manufacturers wanted a little more protection against imports. What was wanted was that they should pledge themselves whole-heartedly for protection; (Applause.) Had they such protection he was sure that much of the inonev which was now going overseas would remain in New Zealand, providing further work for the industrial population, and. would act as a potent factor - in increasing’ the population of the country.
The motion was carried unanimously.
