THE WINTER SHOW

APPROACHING COMPLETION OPENING BY THE GOVERNORGENERAL. A visit to Pipitea sheds on the harbour front yesterday disclosed' , that splendid progress is being made' towards having the exhibition ready for the opening on Thursday afternoon. The tremendous size of the shed, its suitability and (adaptability for such a purpose, is a point that strikes one forcibly upon entering the great building. The great skylights enable the light to penetrate’to every corner, and thq movable overhead cranes have tendered invaluable service in transferring machinery; furnishings, and other heavy goods to the various stands. The stands are being erected with a view to the artistic as well as “for use, and there is everv reason to believe that the exhibition as a whole will compare most favourably with the big exhibitions at Home. There is no less than 80,000 ft of space in use, and so far as the stands are concerned the available space could have been Ist twice over; At the far end of the shed is a large balcony, on which a cosy tea room will he conducted by members of the committee with a view to making it nice and homely. The kitchen arrangemeiits have been completed, and the committee has wisely made some capital expenditure in the way of tablet and chairs for future occasions. ’ ( The annexe for smokers adjoins the tea room, and there is a portion of the stages set aside for the various announcements to he made. On the left a special stand, has been set up for the mannequin parade, a feature that will "have its special appeal for the ladies, >and a special dressing room hfts been provided for the staff concerned. Spot lights. will bring the mannequins into bold relief againtt the dark background. From the balcony an uninterrupted view of tho whole hall is given, the height, of the. stalls having, been restricted to reasonable limits to enable this to be'done. Last year the-average stall holders expressed the opinion that they had done 60 per cent, more business, through tho Wellington Winter Show than at any show in' New Zealand. The opening ceremony on Thursday afternoon is to be performed by the Governor-General, when the Prime Minister, Hon. J. G. Coates, together with the Hon. W./NoswortHy and Hon. G. J. Anderson, are expected to speak. There is every indication that the primary and secondary industries of . the Dominion are going to rise nobly to the occasion, and that |ne Wellington Winter Show will this year be an epochmaking event. The under part of the balcony will be devoted to joy land, hoop-la, etc., and there will also be all the fun of the fair under cover at the main entrance to the shed.
