MOTOR SHIP THISTLEROiS. The motor ship Thistleros, which left Sydney la6t week for Las Palmas, for orders, is probably the finest vessel of her class that has yet visited Australia. The Thistleros, which is now on her first Homeward voyage, was built by D. and W. Henderson Co., Ltd., Glasgow, for Messrs Allan, Black and Co., of Sutherland, which company cotnrols the Albyn Line, Ltd., and also had several steamers previous to the war. including tlie Thistleleard, Thistleban. Thietlerdhu and others, At present this company has two other vessels, the Thistleben and Thistletor.

The Thistleros is the first motor ship constructed for the line. She is 400 ft in length between perpendiculars, 53ft Bin in extreme breadth, and 35ft in moulded depth, with a gros tonnage of 4615. There is a complete shelter deck, and the vessel has been constructed to class 100 At in Lloyd's Register. The propelling machinery has been built and installed by Harland and Wolff. Ltd. It is of the Burmeister and Wain type, and consists of one single-acting Diesel engine, developing a normal power of 1850 b.h.p. when running at 90 revolutions per minute. All the auxiliary machinery is electrically driven, and includes combined cooling water and lubricating oil pumps, fuel oil pumps, and a hand-driven emergency air compressor.

There are no bunkers on the vessel, ihe ballast tanks taking the place of bunkers. In the ballast tanks the 500 tons of oil fuel required for the voyage is stored, and as the Thistleros steams 101 knots on a consumption of 7* tons of oil fuel per day, it is apparent that this class of vessel must command the attention of all ship owners all over the world, not cnly ns the most profitable and economical vessels to run. but also the most, healthful for the crews, especially the engineers' stuff.

The directors of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company recommend the payment of a dividend of 6 per cent, per annum, which is the same as that distributed in each of the three preceding years, and is more than was anticipated in some quarters, in view of the trading conditions in various parts of the world where the company's steamers ply, stoles “Fairplay." The company owns and controls more tonnage built and building than any other ooncern in the world. Its capital, and that of its subsidiary companies, must aggregate nearly .£40,000,600, with over £18,000,000 of preference capital and jglS,ooo, ooo of debentures, and with an unknown amount due under the head of bills payable, loans from bankers, etc. To what extent the public are interested in the capital erf the various companies we do not know, but it is at least interesting to note that, of the .£5,000,000 ordinary stock in the Royal Mail, about J 33,200,000 is held by Lord Kyslant and the affiliated companies. A year ago the company owned 46 vessels of 366,332 tons grofis, while the fleets of those affiliated to it represented a gross registered tonnage of 1,754,434, or a total of 2,120,766 tons. Furthermore, it has taken advantage of the opportunities offered by the Trade Facilities Act, and has, -we believe, about .£15,000,000 worth of new tonnage under construction.
