FOR ELECTION CANDIDATES INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH PROBLEMS. At the, meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association, the chairman, Mr L. T. Watkins, expressed gratification at the manner in which space was being booked up at the exhibition during Wellington 8!iow Week. There were only one or tiro spaces left. The exhibition was bound to be a success, especially in view of the visit of the American Fleet. It showed the necessity of hqving a special week in winter time. In reply to a request from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, it was decided to contribute £lO towards the cost of booklets for distribution to the men of the American Flea*. INTERCHANGE OF TRADE. A letter from the National Union of Manufacturers, London, acknowledged the intimation that Messrs IV. E. C. Reid and W. J. Gamlin would be the representatives of New Zealand at the proposed conference of manufacturers’ associations. A further letter had reference to mutual representation of business houses in New Zealand anil Great Britain respectively, and the secretary is to supply the information required in order to further Imperial trade. FOR WOULD-BE M.P.’S. The following questionnaire had heen submitted by the Canterbury Association to be placed before candidates at tho next Parliamentary election: (1) Will you pledge yourself, if elected, to give your support in the encouragement of secondary industries? Establishments 4461, persons dependent 220,986, Wages and salaries paid £14,573,441, value of goods manufactured £76,996,397, value of land, buildings, and plant £45,498,058. (2) Will you urge that all Government contracts be first submitted to New Zealand manufacturers, and in those cases where it is necessary to secure tenders outside New Zealand are you in favour of New Zealnnd manufacturers being given an opportunity to tender on equal terms? (3) Do you favour an alteration in taxation in tile direction of Government departments being charged Customs duty and harbour taxation on goods ordered from overseas in view of the fact that Dominion manufacturers have to pay these charges on the imported materials? (4) Do you favour preference to Dominion industries by the Service Stores Board and other Government departments, so that they may use every effort to secure their requirements from manufacturers within the Dominion before placing their orders overseas? (5) Will you generally, during your campaign, clearly express your views concerning the duty of Parliament to the secondary and manufacturing industries of the Dominion, and will you set out such Views shortly in answering this circular?

The chairman said there was a distinct desire on the part of manufacturers for the use of a laboratory set apart for scientific and industrial research. Several manufacturers at Dunedin were prepared to guarantee the sum required to establish a research laboratory at Dunedin. The matter is to be further considered.
