“PUFFING BILLY” RUNS AGAIN

“FLYING SCOTSMAN” BEHIND Australian-N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, July 2. The history of railway traction was epitomised at a remarkable centenary pageant this afternoon on the old StocktonDarlington line. Stephenson’s old colliery locomotive “Puffing Billy," , constructed in 1822, .. led a procession six miles in length, followed immediately, in striking contrast, by a modern “Flying Scotsman.” . The most popular feature was the first passenger engine, called “locomotion No. 1,” the driver of which wore a coloured tailcoat and a top hat two feet high, as was the custom when the engine was commissioned in 1825. The Duke of York unveiled a tablet commemorating the hooking of the first passenger in 1825.
