ANTHRAX FROM DUST
The danger of contracting anthrax through the dust rising from dry hides was emphasised by a witness at a Southwark inquest on George Giggins. 48 year 6 of age, a dock labourer, who had been employed at St. Olave’s wharf. Bermondsey, where millions of hides from all parts of the world are handled in a yenT. Ho died in hosoital from anthrax. M'* "Robert Alfred Parfitt. the wharf superintendent, said there had not been a previous fatal case of anthrax at the wharf for 40 years. All the statutory precautions were taken, but it would be impossible to sterilise Ihe hides. Dry hides were the most dangerous owing to the ihist. which might enter any slight cut or abrasion. The coroner returned a verdict of death by misadventure
