TARARUA TRAMPING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING,

The Tararua Tramping Club held their annual meeting in the Y.M.C.A. last evening, when Mr F. IV. Vo6seler (president) presided over a large and enthusiastic muster of members.

In bringing forward the annual report, Mr Vosseler stated inter alia that the Tongariro National Park should remain a national park, a sanctuary for New Zealand flora and fauna, and not be converted into a game park. The determined efforts now being made in this direction should he thwarted. He considered that the proposal to lease sections to private individuals was a matter that required careful watching, as there appeared to be a danger of some of the most sttractive spots going into the hands of private people and a possible trafficking m such cases. It was decided that a strong committee of members of the club be formed to look into the matter of the proposed liberation of game birds in or about the park, and the action of the hon. waiden in connection therewith. Also to take steps with regard to the eradication of heather that had already been planted. A resolution was passed by the members instructing the incoming committee to approach the Government to free from taxation forest that is being held in private ownership for scenic purposes. It was stated that much beautiful bush adjoining public highways would have to be felled because of the taxation imposed. Plantations of pinus radiata and other exotics are free from taxation, and beauty spots of native trees it is considered should likewise be exempt. The followihg officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mfr F. W. Vosseler; vice-presidents, Messrs TV. H. Field, D. R. Hoggard, W. H. "Wilson, and Thomas; chief guide, Mr Les Cross: secretary, Mr A. N. Smith; hon. auditor, Mr Douglas; committee, Messrs Wiren, Archibald, Bain; Hill, Fyfe, von Haast, Murphy, Cousins, Fildes, Denton, Milne, and Rawnsley.
