Esnault Pelterie, inventor of the airplane “joystick” control, known in France as the “broomstick,” failed in his claim for damages against the Avro Company. The court held that the company w r ere merely agents of the British Government and nonsuited Pelterie, on the ground that no foreign government could be. sued in the French courts.

Pelterie, in 1924, obtained £120,000 in similar claims against French airplane companies.
