MR J. P. RIDINGS RETIRING

LENGTHY CUSTOMS HERv'ICE. After 49 years’ service in the Customs Department, Mr J. P. Ridings, Collector of Customs at Auckland, will retire at the end of the month, Mr Ridings was horn in Nelson. He wna educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and joined the department in 1876. He has held positions JN nearly all the main ports in New Zealand. In 1895 he was appointed collector at Oamaru. Later li» went to Hokitika, and then to Dunedin, and went to Auckland 16 years ago. Nothing official regarding Mr Itidjngjs’s successor has yet been announced. l
