SYDNEY CHURCHES PROTEST. LORD MAYOR IN DEFENCE. By Telegraph.—Prees Assn. — Copyright. (Received March 23 , 9.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 23. A deputation representing the Anglican, Presbyterian, Congregational and Baptist churches waited on the Lord Mayor and strongly denounced the City Council’s decision to permit Sunday .sport , and asked him to have the decision revoked. Alderman Stokes, in reply, defended the action of the council, and said undue publicity had been given to flitsubject. but lie promised to bring the question before his party again. The City Council, in which the Labour Party holds power, recently decided to permit tennis to he played on Sundays cn the public parks.
