GENERAL ELECTION
SIR HEATON RHODES. PRESSED TO STAND AGAIN. The Minister for Defence (the Hop. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) was interviewed yesterday as to whether he was reconsidering his previously-expressed determination not to stand again for Par,-, liament at the next General Election. Sir Heaton said that his constituents at Ellesmere _ had been pressing him to stand again, hut he denied a statement published in Christchurch last week to the effect that the Reform Party organisation had urged him to reconsider his decision on the ground that he would have a better chance of holding the seat for the Government than any other candidate representing the Reform Party. “I have not yet discussed the matter with the "Reform Party organisation,” remarked Sir Heaton, who added that it was quite true that if ho did remain a member of Parliament it would be on the understanding that he would not- accept ■Cabinet rank, as the state of his health would nob permit him to undertake the duties involved. Sir Heaton Rhodes declined to say whether or not ho would bo a candidate at the election.
