NEEDS OF COMMERCE TECHNICAL COLLEGE COVER NOES FAVOUR ADVISORY COMMITTEE. ECHO OF CRITICISES. Reference to the recent criticism concerning the present educational system from the commercial point of view was made by Mr \V. H. Bennett, the chairman of the board of governors of the Wellington Technical College, at last night’s meeting of that body. The subject came up for discussion when the director (Mr J. H. Howell) reported that the commercial department of the college was the largest of all. There were about 220 commercial students in the Technical High School, and about 350 in the evening school, of whom 150 were taking the course for the professional accountancy examination. In view of the valuable assistance given by the other advisory committees, it would seem desirable that the commercial department should also have the benefit of such a body. tt was suggested that if the board appi-jved the committee might consist of one representative from each of the following bodies: The Technical School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Society of Accountants, Bank Officers’ Guild, and the Shipping Officers’ Guild. INFLUENCE ON BUSINESS MEN. In moving that the committee be set up, Mr Bennett remarked that if that course were followed it would have a very desirable effect on the commercial world. As they were aware, there had been a certain amount of criticism on the subject of educational instruction from the Chamber of Commerce. “If this committee is set up,” added the chairman, “it will not only give the commercial m<m an idea of what this college is doing, but it will give them an opportunity of suggesting a revision of the syllabus to what tney think is desirable for a student going out into the commercial world.” Mr C. H. Chapman supported the motion, which he characterised as “a step in the right direction.” The motion was carried, and Mr T. Forsyth was appointed to act as the hoard’s representative on the committee.
