STREET PAVING LOAN
DETAILS DF SCHEME GREAT SAVING IN FUTURE EXPENDITURE. TOTAL COST £200,000.
The Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright) handed to a “Times” representative a copy of the schedule of street areas included m the street paving loan of ' £200,000. In the appended list the treatment is with bitumen, unless otherwise stated, arid "where “brick” is mentioned, this. includes a ooncrete base. 1 ho Mnyor stated that these streets had been most costly in maintenance, and- it was owing to the heavy expenditure here that the amount spenton suburban roads had been correspondingly meagre. The dust nuisance and. the noise ot traffic in the streets had become increasingly difficult problems. As an ■ illustration ot the saving which the scheme would bring about, qne had only to _ take Thorndon quay, where formerly in the summer time they had water-carts and scavengers employed all ' day long. Only a fraction of this work was required since the road had been put down in bitumen. It will be noted that the streets are given alphabetically, .and not in order of priority.
