MINISTERIAL . The Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister fog Internal Affairs, returned to Wellington last night from Picton. The Hon. Sir Maui Pomare, Minister for Health, returned from the Eaet Coast yesterday. Among the visitors to Auckland are Aiessrs Frank Goldberg, S. C. Lovell, C E. Nalder, and E. Holmwood, of Wellington. Mr J. W. Yard, of Bristol, England, who has been associated with the Westminster Bank for the past 4 '2 years, is at present on a tour of the Dominion.' Sir James Gunson, Mayor of Auckland, is at, present on a visit to the TongSriro National Park. Sir James resumes his official duties as Mayor on January 32ndThe Rev. Stanley Hinson, for many years, vicar of TO Ngawai, in South Canterbury,, has recently joined the staff of clergy at St. Andrews, Croydon, .near Lpnden. ' Mr J. Hislcp, secretary of the Internal Affaire Deportment, is at pro cant at Dunedin, and will journey to the extreme south before returning to Wellington next week-end. Mr F. J. McComisky, formerly secretary of the Wellington Rngby. Union, /Was in Wellington yesterday on hie way to the West Coast. He has just returned from Melbourne and the Auckland province. Mr H. Crommelin, who has been manager of the Eketahnna branch of the Bank of New Sohth Wales for some years, has received notice of his transfer to the managership of the Dannevirke branch. He expects to leave Eketahnna early in February.
Major and Airs E. Vine, of Wellington, are visiting Wanganui. -Major Vine has recently been appointed assistant commissioner for the Wellington district of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and is.taking the opportunity of visiting the various units under his command.
Mr D. Reese was appointed president of the Canterbury Cricket Association at Die meeting of the executive, in succession to the late Mr D. Rcdpath. In proposing Mr Reese aa president, Mr E. B. Ward spoke highly of Mr Reese’s services to cricket over the lafft twenty years- Mr V*. Simpson seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
Mr H. L. Richardson, MRe., of Victoria University College, who was awarded one of die first two research ashblarships providediby the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and the Government of Newt Zealand, l«s recently advised the university authorities hero of the commencement of his work in the college.. The .University of London has accepted his application for registration as a candidate for its Ph.D. degree, and the Chemical Society that for his ad-, mission -to a! fellowship.
The funeral of the late Hon. Oliver Samuel, ,K.C.. AI-L.C-, took place at New Plymouth on Monday afternoon, bnt vfaa of a private nature. Amopg the dose personal friends attending were the Hon. Sir Walter. Carncross, AI.LIC., Speaker, and the Hon. E. H. Clhrk, M.L.C. Tho pallbearers were: Messte Newton King, J. H. Quilliam, F. -Cjarringten. L. A. - Nolan, E. T ab, and Arthur Morton. Cable advice has been received by Ilf H. D. Bedford, of Te Kowhai, of the,* death in England of his brother, Mr : James Edward Bedford, F.C.S.f F.G.S., formerly Lord Mayor of Leeda. Mr Bedford, jvho was G 3 years of age, was Lord Mayor of Leeds when the war broke out in 1914, and was ap-. pointed a director of ; the; mujmioa works of Yorkshire. He personally con- , ducted, .the KiOg through the. works, receiving high commendation for their - highly-oraanmed and officiant condition. Mr' Bedford was a past myrident vS * the Geological Society. Philosophical Society, and the Boys’ Friendly Society of Yorkshire. The latter society' was promoted to gjve factory lads ’an : opportunity of acquiring adraneieW -eduhation free of charge,, and to Qualify them for promotion in factories, or to' obtain -higher positions in ther directions. As a result, many bright lade have been successful in obtaining lucrative positions in the industrial world.
