CHARCED WITH MURDER
RESULT OF STREET BRAWL. YOUNG MAN REFUSED batt. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, December 27. At the Police Court this morning, Philip Gordon Sutherland, aged 21, was charged with the murder of John James Ryan, aged S 3, the charge arising from a street affray on Tuesday night, a» the alleged result of which Ryan died in the nospitaL When a remand was asked for. M> White, counsel for the accused, asked for bail, characterising the affair as a street affray with an unfortunate ending. A murder charge, in the circumstances, was simply a judicial farce. The chief-detective, however, stated that the allegation was that deceased accidentally humped into the accused and apologised, bnt that ’accused, nevertheless, knocked him down, kicking him. Moreover, an elder brother ol accused made a statement to the policy taking the blame on himself, this be ing, no doubt, a ruse to enable the ao cused to get away. Bail was refused.
