The officials of the Petone Beautifying Society deserve great credit for the handling of the gala, especially Mr O. Silbery, the secretary, who handled a most difficult job with equal care and success. His was a strenuous day. and he aoquittea himself well. The society’s president is the Mayor of Petone, Sir J. W. McEwan, the treasurer being str W. F. Sturman. Mr T. J. Ley. Minister for Justice in the New South Wales Government, was a through passenger on the Niagara, which called at Auckland en route from Sydney to Vancouver. Acting on medical advice, Mr Ley is taking a holiday and rest trip, and will proceed to Vancouver on the Niagara. From there be intends to go overland to San Francisco. and will leave there on the returr trip bv the Maunganui, arriving bacl in Sydney towards the end of Febm ary.
