The late Mr August Belmont, tbs announcement of whose death came from New York a few days ago, was a wellknown sportsman. In 1905 he bought the English stallion Rock Snnd for J 525.000 and six years later a colt (Tracery). sired by Rock Sand, whom he bred in the United States, won the Doncaster St. Leger. Several other important races also fell to him on the English turf. Tracery was subsequently sold for the record price of J 553.000.
