POULTRY JOTTINGS

cantebbtjry Shu’S its first MILLION EGGS.

(By J. B. Merrett in the "N.Z. Poultry Journal.”) „, C ?, n , te ) rb , ury e fß-Producers are to be congratulated on tho export for 1924. They vi"™ t i he w° n< T , of V n * the first proln New Zealand to export its first million eggs. Tho total shipments this season from Christchurch have been 8052 cases, or 1.M8.360 eggs. This is a splendid return for tho season. Otago comes soomn ° n ■i®*' with 1618 cases, or 530,480 eggs: Wellington third, with 1365 cases. Auckland will do about 800 cases. The figures are not yet to hand. The south has been most unfortunate in the securing of ships, and nearly half (he eegs from Christchurch had to be transhipped to Wellington. This expense and trovble didl not frighten the Canterbury Co-op, Poultry Producers. Ltd. Had the whole of the southern eggs been placed on the local markets this sea-son it would have meant a loxs of over .£SOOO to producers. It shows what con bo done end next season the south is out to double its figures. Not half tbe producers have been organised, and the export could vorv easily be doubled. Producers must give export their attention if the industry is to R"o ahead. Wo have been in close touch with the industry for many years, and m our. opinion the prospect was never brighter, but there must be organisation for export. This is work for men !ntercsted in a large way. Tho ordinary man or farmer with ldO birds will not do the work. On the one hand, the former has his weoklv wage, nnd the other has his farm to support him, but the bi" yw ducer is dependent on his production. It i» for him to organise the export aud guarantee supplies. We hone to heln ban along this;line.ter noxt soaaon, and be. liev© we can count on his support. Shipners of eggs this season have done the industry in New Zealand a wood service. A word of praise is due the New Zealand Department, of. Agriculture. The Government .has done in its power to assist. In fact, they are the guarantee behind tho job. Were it, potihoir caro in tho grading no one wonld^care to risk the finance for export. Reports from London shite the e~gs arrived in excellent condition, and that the demand has been good.
