THEFTS AT MURITAI
CHARGES AGAINST WOMAN A plea of not guilty was entered by Esina Irvine, a youfig married woman, to four charges of theft from dwellings at Muritai, when she appeared before Mr E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The accused was represented by Mr W. H. Tustin. * Tho chargee entered against her were for breaking and entering by day the house of Elizabeth Parker Martin, Nellie McDonald, p.ra Harriett Clinton Hunt, and Alice Ayson, and stealing goods to the value of £29 12s. Jane Hayvica, a second-hand dealer, said that on June 20th a lady, whom she ilentified as being the accused, came into her shop and showed her a ring. Witness had suspicions about it and offered the lady £L for it, giving ' her 10s down, and promising to pay the remainder in tile afternoon. The ladv gave the name of Mrs Curwood, Bright street. The lady took the 10s and left the shop, when witness immediately communicated with the police. The other 10s was never called for. Detective Hunt said that when ho arrested the accused she made a statement admitting theft® from six different houses. The accused wag committed to the Supreme 'Court for trial, and bail was fixed in a bond of £SO.
